The Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze Governing Council Has Appointed Mrs Nonye Cecilia Ibekwe as College Acting Provost.
The Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze has appointed the former Dean, School of Education, Dr Cecilia Nonye Ibekwe, Acting Provost.She took over the leadership of the College from Professor Josephat Okechukwu Ogbuagu, whose tenure ended on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Dr Ibekwe, who became a Chief Lecturer in 2008, was appointed by the 6th Governing Council of the College, headed by Barrister Ibrahim Abdu Radda. Her work profile revealed that she joined the College on March 15, 1991 as a Lecturer 111 and rose through the ranks to become a Chief Lecturer in 2008, an equivalent of Associate Professor in a university setting.
Radda said Ibekwe was appointed by the Council to provide the strong leadership needed in the College, pending the appointment of the next substantive provost.
He said members of the Council remain dedicated to the task of making the College a reference point among other tertiary institutions in the country.
Investigations revealed that during her 26 years of service in the College, Dr Ibekwe had served as the HOD, Educational Foundation, Dean, School of Sandwich and TTC, Coordinator Teaching Practice and Dean, School of Education and General Studies. A thorough-bred scholar, she studied B.A (ED) Religious Studies at the Bendel State University, Abraka campus (1983-1987), and M.ED (Philosophy of Education) at the University of Ibadan.
She further obtained her doctorate degree programme at the University of Port-Harcourt (2010-2014) in Philosophy of Education. Reputed for her unassuming lifestyle and dedication to academic excellence, members of the College Academic Board praised her appointment as a step in the right direction.
In her first meeting with members of the Academic Board, Dr Ibekwe urged the academic staff of the College never to relent in their good work and assured them that her leadership would continue to initiate and execute policies that would move the institution forward.
Some of the academic staff, who spoke to our reporter after the meeting, promised to accord the Acting Provost the required support and described her appointment as a true recognition of honesty and hard work.
Dr Ibekwe knows the College terrain so well, having served in various College Committees and Ad-Hoc Committees. She is also member of several professional associations, including Philosophy of Education Association of Nigeria (PEAN), National Association of Curriculum Theorists (NACT), Technology Education Writers Association of Nigeria (TEWAN), among others.
