BSUM 16 Academic Programmes Undergoes Accreditation by the NUC Team

The National Universities Commission, NUC Team Accredits Sixteen Programmes of the Benue State University, Makurdi. they Include;  History, Linguistics and Philosophy, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Education, Home Economics, Industrial Chemistry, Zoology, Statistics, Geography, and Political Science.

Between May 21 and June 8, 2018, Benue State University, Makurdi received sixteen teams from the National Universities Commission, Abuja for the accreditation of Sixteen academic programmes offered by the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Msugh Moses Kembe, while addressing the various teams during their visits, expressed the readiness of the University for the Accreditation and charged them to be fair, objective and honest in assessing the programmes.

Professor Kembe assured that Management and Staff had put measures in place to ensure that staff and materials for the programmes to be accredited are adequately provided for the exercise.

The programmes that underwent accreditation include: History, Linguistics and Philosophy, in the Faculty of Arts; English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Education and Home Economics in Faculty of Education while Industrial Chemistry, Zoology and Statistics are in Faculty of Science, with Geography, (Faculty of Environmental Sciences) and Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Zoology team led by the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Prof. Armayau Hamisu, who spoke on behalf of other teams, stated that, accreditation is a peer review exercise which is aim at ensuring that Programmes offered by the Universities conform with the National Universities minimum standard.

It could be recalled that in March 2018, the National Universities Commission (NUC), released the results of the November/December 2017 accreditation exercise carried out in the University. The accreditations, which were conducted in eleven academic programmes gained full accreditation status with 2022 as maturity period for most of them getting full accreditation, including Law and Medicine.

Since the inception of the Benue State University, Makurdi, over twenty-five years ago, this is the first time, a Vice-Chancellor was leading a team for accreditation in the University. Both teams have presented their exit report to the Vice-Chancellor.

In a status report by the NUC addressed to the Vice-Chancellor dated 7th March, 2018 the Programmes that were granted Full Accreditation includes:
Public Administration
French
Educational Management
Guidance and Counselling
Pre-Primary and Primary Education
Law
Medicine and Surgery
Chemistry
Computer Science
Mathematics
Physics

The National Universities Commission has the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian universities to enhance standard.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Msugh Moses Kembe, thanked God for granting the eleven academic programmes full accreditation status and commended the Deans, Heads of Departments, Staff and students for their immense contributions and support for the success recorded.

Professor Kembe appreciated the Benue State Government’s sustained support to the University and solicited for sustenance.

The Vice-Chancellor called on Benue citizens and other well spirited individuals to contribute to the infrastructural development of the University to enhance teaching, learning and research.
