FUTA 2018 SIWES Orientation: Students Charged to Acquire Necessary Skills

Federal University of Technology, Akure [FUTA] Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme [SIWES] Students Mandated to Acquire Necessary Skills Relevant to Career Development While on their Compulsory Seven Months Industrial Attachment During 2018 Orientation Programme.

 Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure have been mandated to acquire the necessary skills relevant to career development while on their compulsory seven months Industrial Attachment. The students were given the charge at the 2018 Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme [SIWES] orientation programme organised by the Industrial Training Unit of the Institution for 400 level students.

Delivering a keynote address at the programme, the Deputy Director and Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund, Akure Area Office, Mrs. Gloria Dipeolu represented by Mr. Gabriel Oladimeji implored students to take advantage of the period of Industrial Attachment to acquire all the technical skills they need to enhance their knowledge of their respective programmes of study.

She said SIWES is a skills training programme designed to expose students of Higher Institutions of learning to the Industrial Work situation beyond the four walls of the classroom. Dipeolu said the scheme also aims at exposing the students to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their institutions and urged them to comport themselves decently, obey constituted authority and observe all safety measures in any organisation they find themselves.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor [Academics], Professor Olatunde Arayela urged the students to show commitment to the scheme as it is a Federal Government Policy formulated to bridge the gap between the theoretical background in the school and practical knowledge in the industry and is very germane to the production of the much needed competent indigenous manpower.

Professor Fuwape admonished students to utilise the scheme to acquire industrial skills and experience. He said “I am appealing to all the intending IT Students here present to show commitment to the cause of this National Policy and display attitudes that will make it highly beneficial to you. Doing this, will in no doubt guarantee you placement in the highly competitive Nigerian society where job opportunities are continually dwindling”.

The Vice-Chancellor implored the students to keep the flag flying by representing FUTA well in their various places of industrial training as site supervisors rated FUTA students who had undergone the programme high in terms of discipline, commitment to work and readiness to learn.

On his part, the Director, Industrial Training Unit [ITU] FUTA, Professor Benjamin Akinyele said the demand for FUTA students has always been very high as some industries and organisations have reported that students of the Institution on industrial attachment have performed many feats, revived some of their moribund machines thereby making them more productive. He admonished the students to protect the name and image of the University in their various places of industrial training.

Students were lectured on current trends in SIWES Programme, purpose of SIWES and its importance, and SIWES working document and the imperatives of good quality report writing during SIWES.
