The Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Rumuokwuta Area Office in Rivers State Urges Students to Maximize Industrial Attachment to Enhance Employment Opportunities.
Undergraduate students in Nigerian tertiary institutions have been urged to make best use of the period of their industrial attachment in order to enhance their chances of employment after graduation.The Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Rumuokwuta Area Office in Rivers State, Lady Amaka Iwunze, gave this advice when she led coordinators and officials of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele.
The body was in the institution for its quarterly routine zonal meeting.
Lady Iwunze who noted that the fund was established by the federal government of Nigeria immediately after the civil war to train indigenous manpower who would take over the economy of Nigeria from the control of expatriates, disclosed that the 47 years old interventionist agency has fulfilled the reason for its establishment in the country.
She disclosed that SIWES was specifically established to impart skills to graduates and non-graduates in order to improve their skills so as to close the yarning gaps between theory and practical skills among Nigerian students, and hinted that over 500 persons have recently been trained and empowered with starter kits in the state.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has described the acquisition of practical skills in the present day economy of Nigeria as very useful.
Represented by the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Professor Folorunsho Ogunleke, the Vice-Chancellor lauded SIWES for the prompt payment of industrial allowances to the students and their supervisors, and also appealed for regular payment in subsequent times.
He informed the visitors that the university has secured accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence the award of B.A and B.Sc. degrees in 17 programmes at the undergraduate level.
He also disclosed that the institution has graduated its first batch of Master’s degree programme in a record time of one year, and described the university’s graduate programme as the fastest in the south-south, and is quickly gaining global visibility. He further wished them fruitful deliberations.
