Federal College of Education, Technical [FCET UMUNZE] Provost Dr. Tessy Obumneme Okoli Urges National Universities Commission (NUC) to Increase Admission Quota for the College Degree Programme

The Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Dr. Tessy Obumneme Okoli, has appealed to the National Universities Commission (NUC) to increase the admission quota for the College degree programme.
She said 13 degree programme offered in the College, in affiliation with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has increased students’ access to degree programme in the area.
Dr. Okoli made the appeal during the recent visit of the NUC monitoring team led by Lauretta N. Achor to the College.
The three-day monitoring exercise also had Patrick Uka and Adebayo Ibrahim as team members as they inspected learning facilities, academic materials and drilled lecturers in the various schools offering degree programme.
While commending the exercise, Dr. Okoli stated that the checklist provided by the team would help the College to stick to the template approved for the degree programme. However, she expressed concern on the low admission quota granted to the College by the NUC, despite the fact that all her degree programmes enjoy full accreditation.
“Our facilities are under – utilized.  Some of the hostels are empty because of low admission quota for degree programme.  Since the College has complied with the standard and guidelines mapped out by the NUC and the affiliate university, it is our earnest expectations that the NUC should increase our admission quota,’’ she said.
Okoli explained that the College has over 50 doctorate degree holders in various fields, coupled with standard facilities, which have impacted positively in the quality of teaching provided in the College.
In her response, the NUC team leader said the monitoring exercise was part of the quality assurance undertaken by the regulatory body to ensure compliance to standard and guidelines for the degree programme.
She further explained the step was taken to ensure that degree graduates in the country remain globally competitive.
Achor commended the College for going beyond her core mandate in NCE programme to run degree in affiliation with UNIZIK. She described it as a crucial step that would help in resolving the problem of access to university degree programme by students.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Joseph Ahaneku, represented by the Dean, School of Education, Prof Nkechi Esomonu, described the visit of the NUC as timely.
He noted that the visit would instil the culture of quality in the consciousness of the host institutions running degree programme.
“With this visit and the checklist provided by the NUC, it will enable the institution to do the needful. The degree programme of the FCE(T) Umunze enjoy the full oversight functions of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University. It has been a good relationship. This exercise would highlight the good points to be strengthened, while the observable lapses would be improved on,” he said.
While conducting the NUC team around the College facilities, the Deputy Provost, Dr. Jane Chinyere Madichie, explained that out of the seven Schools in the institution, only four of them run degree programme.
She further solicited for the expansion of degree programme to other courses to encourage more enrolment.
