UBA National Essay Competition 2020 [SS 1 - 3] | Win Up to 5.5 Million

UBA Foundation arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Annual National Essay Competition Form, Eligibility, Topic, Prizes, Submission Guidelines & Deadline for Senior Secondary Schools (SS 1 - SS 3) in Nigeria for 2020 [10th Edition].

UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, announces the commencement of the 2020 edition of the National Essay Competition for senior secondary school students in Nigeria.

The Competition provides a competitive platform to develop tho intellectual and writing abilities of senior secondary school students in Nigeria.

Winners get educational grants to study in any African University of their choice.

The competition which is a follow up on the Foundation’s Read Africa Initiative, provides a competitive platform to develop the intellectual and writing abilities of senior secondary school students in Nigeria.

Winners get educational grants to study in any African University of their choice. The competition has been held annually since 2011 with students challenged to write on different engaging topics to test their writing and cognitive skills.

This year’s edition has been modified to ensure ease of access and increased participation of senior secondary school students from the comfort of their homes through the introduction of a digital submission portal.

The Foundation has also increased the prize money for the 2020 edition of the NEC as the first prize winner will get an educational grant of N2.5m, up from N2m in 2019. The second and third prize winners will now receive N2m and N1.5m educational grants respectively, from N1.5m and N1m which were awarded in the previous year’s competition.


ABOUT AWARD

Now in its 10th year, the National Essay Competition, targeted at senior secondary students in Nigeria is organized annually, as part of UBA Foundation’s education initiative which is aimed at
promoting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

ESSAY TOPIC:

SELECTION CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY: 

  • Be a Secondary School Student
  • Must submit a handwritten essay (750 words MAX)
  • Must submit a passport photograph
  • Must submit a copy of a birth certificate, National ID or passport

PRIZES

  • 1st Prize: N2.5M or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees
  • 2nd Prize: N2M or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees
  • 3rd Prize: N1.5M or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees

OR

The first prize for the UBA National Essay  Competition is a N2.5 million educational grant, while the second and third prizes are N2 million  and N1.5 million in educational grants  respectively.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • Applicants must attach photocopies of their original birth certificates or photocopies of intentional passport data page.
  • Applicants must be senior secondary school students living in Nigeria.
  • Applicants should send in handwritten essay entries Of not more than 750 words on the competition topic.
  • Applicants must submit their complete contact information (school name and address residential address, phone number and email address).
  • The educational grant is only applicable to students who intend to study in an African university.
  • The decision of the judges is final LATE ENTRIES will not be accepted

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessement. Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 12 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition.
