Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB Unveils New Innovations for the Smooth Conduct of the Upcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, Also Frowns at Admissions Irregularities in Tertiary Institutions.
Ahead of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced some innovations to facilitate the successful conduct of the examination starting from the registration exercise.Prof. Oloyede made this known in Abuja on Monday at the meeting of critical stakeholders on strategic planning and preparations for the supervision and evaluation of the administration of 2019 UTME slated for Thursday, 11th April, 2019.
The Registrar disclosed that a robust item bank with appropriate safeguards had been developed to ensure that the Board had enough items for the conduct of its Computer-Based Test (CBT).
The Registrar stated that “a separate indicator had also been created for the deaf (mute) to differentiate them from other candidates for special attention at the examination centre.”
The Equal Opportunity Group, headed by Prof. Peter Okebukola, has been mandated to ensure that the blind candidates are properly catered for.
Continuing, he said, “We now have live reports on centres that registered every candidate. The time of registration, the officer who registered the candidate, the computer system used, the location of registration, among others are now connected and linked to the central data bank, to ensure that we regulate the registration exercise” “All these are done through our enhanced monitoring system.
I want to warn candidates expected to sit for the 2019 UTME to ensure that their biometrics is verified as that is the only attendance register”.
He emphasised that no examination would be rescheduled for any reason.
According to Prof. Oloyede, biometric verification will be the only mode for the admittance of candidates into the examination centres.
He noted that the increasing threat of identity fraud during the UTME before the advent of Biometric Verification Machine (BVM) necessitated its introduction for capturing the biometrics of candidates to counter fraud. He said, “Any candidate that cannot be verified by the BVM must not be allowed to take the examination under any guise.
This is because all candidates whose fingerprints could not be captured during registration from centres across the country were brought to JAMB Headquarters and were registered appropriately.
“In other words, exemption mode is not allowed for any candidate. Therefore, no biometric verification, no examination,” Prof. Oloyede stated.
On admission irregularities and infractions, Prof. Oloyede lamented that some institutions had compromised standards by flagrantly flouting extant guidelines on admissions.
A visibly-displeased Registrar of JAMB, pointed out that some institutions had engaged in unwholesome acts to pave way for their preferred candidates against qualified ones.
He said that methods adopted included denying candidates screening scores to disqualify them, warehousing candidates for preferred programmes and stratifying candidates into programmes before summation of scores.
Other unwholesome practices included admitting awaiting result candidates, lowering of merit aggregate cut-off mark to below 45 percent and using catchment to admit unqualified candidates among others.
Prof. Oloyede urged those guilty of these crimes to desist as the 2019 UTME and Admissions would be anchored on fairness, openness, equity and merit.
