Former Minister of Education, Mrs. Nora Chinwe Obaji, has scored the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB) high in the conduct of the 2019 Unified Tertiary matriculation Examination (UTME).Mrs Obaji, who gave, JAMB a pass mark shortly after monitoring the examination in Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), submitted that the four-decade old body has improved tremendously on its service delivery to the nation, particularly, in the conduct of examination that would stand the test of time.
Mrs. Obaji who made a comparison between the conduct of 2018 and 2019 UTME posited that the Board's recent innovations may not be unconnected with the huge successes recorded in the discharge of its statutory functions.
She said in spite of the hitches observed on the first day of the exercise in 2018, most of the centres in 2019 were able to conduct their sessions on the first day.
The former Minister, however, pointed out some isolated hitches which were promptly attended to.
The former Minister who had hitherto being a critic of JAMB expressed her delight at the positive changes that have taken place in the Board.
She particularly conveyed her satisfaction at the promptness at which the Board addressed some of the initial problems noticed in some of the centres she monitored.
She lauded the synergy between the JAMB's field staff and the Headquarters which she said was largely responsible for the smooth conduct of the examination. Mrs. Obaji, while responding to a question on some students' inability to log in said, "The use of Computer for the conduct of CBT is not a complex operation as Board had simplified the process by the introduction on nine keys without a mouse. All a candidate needs is to punch the right alphabets pertaining to the candidates' choice.
She, however, recommended that computer literacy programme for primary and secondary schools should be introduced to eliminate the phobia for computers. She advised the Board not to approve any Center located in but not owned by Secondary Schools. She also urge the Board to also check thee Philosophy of these centers owners to ensure that profit is not their sole motive for venturing into centre ownership.
