ACEONDO Governing Council Appoints Akpokurerie as College Librarian

Adeyemi College of Education (ACEONDO) Governing Council Appoints Mr. Azino Akpokurerie as the Substantive College Librarian.

 The Governing Council of the foremost teacher-training institution in Nigeria, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo has appointed Mr. Azino Akpokurerie as the substantive College Librarian.

This was stated in a letter of offer of appointment dated 20th June, 2019 signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council of the institution, Mrs. Olufisayo Olukemi Fakorede.

“I write on behalf of the Governing Council, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo to offer you appointment as College Librarian,” the letter stated.

“The appointment which takes effect as soon as you assume duty is for five (5) years in the first instance,” the letter indicated.

Mr. Akpokurerie, a seasoned Librarian and library administrator for almost two decades, assumed duty in the College on Monday, 1st July, 2019.

He stated that his “mission is to provide information to produce graduates for the new millennium learners and to enhance Library and Information Centres that will support excellence in-life-long learning.”

The versatile Librarian maintained that he would facilitate discovery and engagement for the improvement of the human condition within a student and researchers-centred and collaborative environment.

He assured that he would provide knowledge with innovation and traditional resources, technologies and educational services to all students, researchers and sundry.

This, according to the newly appointed College Librarian, is based on the fact that the library inspires learning and discovery through information resources, collaboration and expertise.

He revealed that his vision is to make the College Library an intellectual centre to all other libraries and information science and technology by fully integrating its services with the state-of-the-art technologies and unique collections into all aspect of our institution and research centre.

He stated: “Since the Department is a strategic asset for all students and researchers, the provision of intellectual leadership and extraordinary information experiences toward the advancement of knowledge will also be one of my priorities and intensive digitization of knowledge.”

Until his appointment in July 2019, he was the Polytechnic Librarian at The Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State from May 2018 to June 2019.

Employed as Teacher Librarian at Auntie Rose Group of Schools, Abraka in 2000, he moved to the Delta State Library Board, Asaba in May 2002 as Librarian II and by December 2002 he became Librarian I at the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, where he acted as the pioneer Polytechnic Librarian who established the institution’s library.

In October 2003, he rose to the rank of Senior Librarian and by January 2006 became Principal Librarian until December 2008 as head of administration and reader services librarian.

Between 2010 and 2014 he ventured into part-time lecturing at the Department of Library and Information Science, Imo State University, Owerri (Asaba/Onitsha Outreach Centre) and in 2012 he also took up lecturing on part-time basis at the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku and that year he was promoted to the position of Assistant Chief Librarian.

By January 2015, he attained the rank of Chief Librarian in his institution and from there he applied and was appointed the Polytechnic Librarian in 2018 at The Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State.

He served as member, secretary and chairman of various committees and sub-committees in the course of his career in the two institutions and had attended local and international conferences where he presented papers and had also published many articles in reputable journals aside books and chapters in books.

The ebullient Librarian has been on the frontier of establishing new libraries in his home state, Delta State.

While at the Delta State Library Board, Asaba, he was part of the advisory team that led to the establishment of Delta State Government House Library, Asaba in 2002 and was commissioned as part of the team to establish and give advice on how to sustain the growth of the High Court Library in Ogwashi-Uku in September 2003.

Born 3rd September, 1967 in Ozoro Town in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, he was christened Azino Oscarand Akpokurerie.

He attended Amawhe Primary School, Ozoro where he obtained the First Leaving School Certificate in 1981 and Notre Dame College, Ozoro where he got the General Certificate in Education (GCE) Ordinary Level in 1986 and later in 1989 earned The West African Examination Council (WAEC) Technical Certificate from Ofagbe Technical College, Ofagbe all in Delta State.

He proceeded to the Delta State University, Abraka where he studied and obtained a Bachelor of Library Science in Library Science in 1998. Later, he had a Master of Library Science in Library and Information Science- Information Technology from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and has been pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Library and Information Science at UNN.

Akpokurerie is a member of several professional associations such the National Association of Library and Information Science Education (NALISE) since 2014, Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) since 2011, Nigerian Library Association, Cataloguing, Classification and Indexing (NLACCI) since 2005 and Nigerian Library Association (NLA) in 1999.

He is married and blessed with five children.
