Candidates that are to sit for next year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will have their applications linked to their National Identification Number (NIN).
This is despite the fact that the attempt to do so this year failed because of hiccups that trailed the exercise which eventually led to its abandonment at the end of the day.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB and the National Identification and Management Commission, NIMC, have revealed the exercise will be part of the criteria for registering for UTME in 2021.
Both agencies entered into an agreement early this year to make UTME candidates have their applications linked to their NIN, however, given the directive by government that GSM operators should have the lines of their customers linked to their NIN, the pressure on NIMC is becoming overwhelming.
The Head of Corporate Affairs in the Commission, Mr. Kayode Adegoke, said the NIN will be used as one of the criteria to register UTME candidates from next year because the earlier agreement signed between the two agencies is still subsisting.
He explained that the NIN was not used in 2020 exercise due to some technical hitches that have been taken care of by the agency.
He assured that NIMC was ready for the partnership as the agency had put all necessary machinery in motion to capture all the candidates.
On whether NIMC would have the capacity to capture the over two million prospective UTME candidates, he said measures had been put in place to capture at least four million persons in a month.
In addition, Adegoke said with the recent licensing of 203 agents to boost the capacity of the agency, the issue of capturing two million UTME candidates would not be an issue since the number of enrolment would be increased when the agents come on board next week.
He advised the prospective UTME candidates to take advantage of ample time they have now to get their NIN so as to avoid rushing hour and consequential denial to register.
‘‘They are not coming now that they have four months to enroll, it is when it remains one week that you see them rushing. There is no need to rush, if they start early now they have four months, they will all be registered. But you see, they will be coming one week to the deadline.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Baord (JAMB) wishes to inform all candidates, parents, guardians and other stakeholders that as from 2021 UTME Registration that the use of the 10 finger biometric capturing has been abolished.
The Board is now working with the National Identity Management Commission
(NIMC) which will provide all candidates who wish to sit for the boards examination with the National Identification
Number (NIN) which will be used for the upcoming 2021 UTME Registration exercise.
All candidates are hereby informed to proceed to any of the National Identity Management Commission
(NIMC) to get captured and acquire the National Identification
Number (NIN) which will be used during the 2021 UTME Registration.
Enrollment with the National Identity Management Commission
(NIMC) for the National Identification
Number (NIN) for the FIRST TIME is absolutely FREE OF CHARGE.
NOTE: This newly adopted process is compulsory, as any candidate who fails to acquire the NIN will not be eligible to register for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The Board also disclosed that the reason for the adoption of the new method is to guard against all forms of registration infractions and also for national security.
The Adoption of NIN entails that the board will no longer need to capture the biometrics of candidates during 2021 UTME registration as their information needed by the board would be uploaded directly from the data captured by the NIMC for registration.
Candidates will be required to provide their NIN at the point of their UTME registration.
Candidates who had registered and acquired the NIN before attaining
the age of 16 are required to update their NIN registration status before proceeding
for the UTME registration.
Candidates who has enrolled with the National Identity Management Commission
(NIMC) but has misplaced their NIN can
still retrieve it either by going to any NIMC office/its licensed agents
or dialing *346# (USSD Code) on the SIM number earlier used to register
and their NIN would be sent to their phone number.

In a process whereby such candidates misplaced the SIM number used for the NIN
registration, such candidate should visit the nearest NIMC centre or
any of its licensed agents for manual retrieval process.
Each Candidate’s name will be arranged as gotten from the NIMC registration database and at such candidates are expected to fill in their correct names and other details while enrolling for the National Identification
Number (NIN).
Any candidate who has complaints of name arrangement such a candidate
should first rectify the issue with NIMC before proceeding for
2021 UTME registration.
Schools are also advised to make arrangements for their students to be captured. This NIN is very important, not only for JAMB Registration but also for national security.
Please be informed that all payments on JAMB Services are made directly to the Board's Treasury Single Account (TSA).
The Board frowns on any form of financial dealings between candidates and staff.
Therefore, candidates involved in any financial transaction with a staff of the Board should notify the Board immediately and also provide any useful information about such staff for necessary action.
