Babcock University (BU) Dismisses Allegations / Fake News on Students of the Institution Being Infected with the Deadly Coronavirus.
You may have read two reports alleging that three new patients of coronavirus have been discovered in Nigeria. The reports claim that the patients "are 300L students of Babcock University”, and that they “are presently being held and quarantined in the Lagos federal hospital".These reports are not only irresponsible and blatant falsehood, they are tantamount to causing apprehension among students and parents of the University, as well as panic in the country. This fake news is being peddled despite warning by the Federal Ministry of Information against disinformation on the virus in the country, as the government is doing all that is required to contain the spread beyond the only case so far reported.
Babcock University is as shocked as the rest of you that this slur in its entirety would be spread by any sentient and thinking creature in the guise of journalism. We can only conclude that the said reports must have emanated from individuals’ intent on disparaging the University for no just cause. Afterall, Babcock University has consistently enrolled and graduated number top class students each year among the over 79 private universities in the country, while others struggle for any meaningful impact in that regard.
Babcock University has impeccable track record as a center of academic excellence in Law, Medicine, Accounting, Computer and Nursing. Just to mention a few. Babcock University has always been proactive in all she does, and she takes very seriously the health and safety of her students and staff.
At the outbreak of the #Coronavirus, the University produced 10,000 copies of handbills to create awareness of the virus and how it can be prevented. The handbills were distributed to students and staff on campus, as well as in the surrounding communities. The University also produced and distributed sanitizers campus-wide as part of preventive measure. Infrared thermometers were distributed to security personnel at the 3 gates to the University and at the Accident & Emergency section of the University's Teaching Hospital.
Temporary isolation areas have also been identified at Babcock University Teaching Hospital. Face masks have equally been distributed to certain personnel of the University, while orders have been placed for additional relevant drugs. More enlightenment is being carried out in all worship centers of the University. The University has also opened communication lines with Ogun State Ministry of Health.
We reassure all our stakeholders that Babcock University has no case of #coronavirus. None of our students has the virus.
Babcock University is cosmopolitan. It has an open communication system that enables anyone to access and verify information from the established credible source - the Vice-Chancellor, through the office of the director of communications and marketing at suleimanj@babcock.edu.ng
We thank everyone who has shown positive concern since the reckless, insensitive and provocative disinformation was bandied around. The information lacks any credible source.
Suleiman Joshua,
Director, Communication and Marketing, Babcock University.
