COVID-19: Brief Details and Information on Corona Virus Origin, Symptoms, Preventive Measures and Medical Contacts in Nigeria.


The General Public is aware of the outbreak of Corona-Virus (COVID 19) which is a global phenomenon and highly infectious, first identified in Wuhan, China, in December, 2019.

The scourge is contagious and fast spreading among the communities. It transmits from person to person through cough, sneezing, physical contact with infected person(s) and contaminated materials.


The symptoms of the COVID 19 are strongly associated with fever, cough, weakness and shortness of breath, which can be treated with timely medical care.

Confirmed cases of COVID 19 had been recorded in the country, though, still under control with other medical measures.


Members of the Public are therefore enjoined to be medically conscious and take the following measures to ensure self protection and prevention of further transmission of the scourge:

1. Wash hands with soap and water regularly or use alcohol-based hand sanitizes if available.
2. Maintain at least 1 meters distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
3. Make sure you and people around you, cover their mouth, nose with tissue paper, handkerchief or use their elbow to cover when coughing or sneezing.
4. Do wear face mask if you are sick and also if you are taking care of someone with the symptoms.
5. Do not touch your mouth, eye or nose with an unclean material.
6. Visit the healthcare services if you feel unwell with symptoms like fever, cough and difficulty in breathing.

All persistent cases of fever, cough, sneezing and difficulty in breathing should be quickly reported to the nearest Medical Centre or call the NCDC Toll free line on 080097000010

Similarly, all emergencies and suspected cases should be channeled to the Emergency Unit of the respective State Medical Care.
