2022 NABTEB ENGLISH LANGUAGE (THEORY) ANSWERS:

NUMBER 1
ONE GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER

Once upon a time, there lived a boy called Adekunle in a small town of Ogbomosho. He was an honest and well-behaved boy. He lived with his uncle, Ayo. One day, this boy Adekunle gained admission to a college in another town after finishing his primary school. His uncle Ayo escorted him to a motorpark, paid his transport fare and stayed with him. He gave him some words of advice before the vehicle left the terminus. After some hours, the driver stopped the vehicle and everybody disembarked from the vehicle either to get snacks, food or refreshed themselves. Adekunle stood by the side of the vehicle waiting for the passengers to finish their purchase. He saw one of the passengers standing and glancing at a newspaper, not knowing that his wallet had mistakenly fallen from his pocket. Adekunle who had been observing the man for some time, knowing that the man was oblivion of what had happened, walked to the man and said, "excuse me sir, your wallet has fallen down from your pocket". He picked it and handed it over to the man. The man looked at the boy, parted him on the head and said, ‘'thank you’'.

Shortly after, all the passengers entered the vehicle and continued their journey. Not up to five minutes that they had left, a woman started shouting, saying she had lost her money and that somebody from the vehicle picked the money. She pointed at Adekunle and started dragging the boy to bring her money out. Adekunle was so confused and did not know what to do. He couldn't even defend himself because he was a small boy. In the midst of the commotion, the man that Adekunle helped looked back and saw Adekunle crying, and shouted that no one should point accusing finger at the boy, that he was innocent. They all looked at him and then asked him how he knew since he was not related to the boy in any way. He then narrated how Adekunle had seen his purse that contained all the money he was travelling with and returned it back to him. He emphasized that if the boy could not remove any dime from his purse but returned all back to him, how could he now steal the money that he was been accused of?

The man’s statement saved Adekunle that day. Adekunle then went to the man and said, "thank you sir, you saved me from trouble today." The man replied, ‘’One good turn deserves another.’’
