NSS Ghana Engages Nurses & Midwives in Fighting COVID-19 Pandemic

Ghana Ministry of Health in Collaboration with Ghana National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (NMC Ghana) Announces Engagement of Nurses and Midwives in the Fight Against Corona Virus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

Following the Public Services Commission's circular recommending that as part of measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19, all interns, national service personnel, NABCO officers, and other non-essential staff could take their leave and the Circular from the National Service Scheme that;

a. All National Service Personnel are to take their mandatory paid-annual leave effective Thursday, 26th March, 2020 till the end of April 2020. 

b. All newly-posted nurses who are due to start national service in April 2020, are also to take the month of April 2020 as their terminal leave.

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National Service Scheme would like to inform its stakeholders that in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the services of nurses, midwives and other frontline healthcare workers are very critical and essential.

1. The Ministry of Health is therefore requesting that all Nurses and Midwives currently undergoing national service should remain at post until the end of their service.

2. Nurses and Midwives who are due to commence the 2020/2021 national service should report to their various posting centres to commence their service as required.

3. As part of measures to beef up the number of nurses and midwives in the country to help contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) the Ministry is seeking financial clearance to engage the 2017-2018 graduate nurses and midwives.

4. The Ministry, in compliance with the President's directives, is also mobilizing retired health professionals to augment the number of frontline health workers to help deal with the impact of the disease in the country.

5. The Ministry is appealing to nurses and midwives and frontline healthcare workers that as the country is battling with the increasing numbers it is expected of them to draw on their deep reserves of compassion and determination to deal with the coronavirus.
