NECO GCE GEOGRAPHY (ESSAY) ANSWERS 2021:

(1a)
Population density is the concentration of individuals within a species in a specific or per unit geographic area.

(1b)
(i) Topography: Topography can be a key factor in determining how many people live in a certain area. Generally speaking, people prefer to live where it is easier to build homes, workplaces, and transportation networks. For example, mountainous areas are normally not densely populated, because it is difficult to construct complex structures on mountainous terrain

(ii) Natural resources:
Population density tends to be higher in areas that have more natural resources. For this reason, areas where there are deserts or high mountains present tend to have less people living in them. One particular natural resource has always been an important factor in determining where people live ie water. Since ancient times, humans have had a tendency to live where there are abundant freshwater resources.

(iii) Climate:
Climate is a major physical factor in determining population density. People are more likely to live where the climate is suitable for cultivation. This means that there needs to be both enough rain and enough heat to grow crops. Areas of the world where it is extremely hot or extremely cold are generally sparsely populated.

(iv) Vegetation:
Some types of vegetation make the development of settlement more likely, e.g. grasslands. Areas with particularly dense rainforest, coniferous forests or those with little vegetation tend to have sparse populations.

(i) It brings about job creation and availability of employment opportunities
(ii) It generates income that will alleviate poverty
(iii) It helps in attracting foreign investment
(iv) It helps in the enhancement of cultural heritage

(2b)
(i) Terrorism and security challenges:
Terrorism, robberies, kidnappings etc. contribute to problems in the tourism sector. Nigeria, for instance, has had her own share of insecurity issues and they keep visitors far away from the country. It is so bad now that even other nations warn their citizens of the dangers involved in visiting the country

(ii) Lack of proper management: A country where the tourist destinations are poorly managed, it will hinder the growth of tourism. Same case as when beaches are overcrowded and other sites lack basic necessities to ensure the comfort and and satisfaction of visitors.

(iii) Lack of proper data: The data that is gotten is used to make adequate provisions for visitors. Therefore, if this is lacking, we cannot but have the problem of poor management. Enough data is needed to be able to plan ahead and improve the tourism industry.

(iv) Inadequate investment and funding: This is a major problem considering that tourism is one of the largest employers of labour all over the world and its development has immense benefits to the economy. Tourism is underfunded relative to its potential if one takes a look at our budgets over the years. This has caused development in the sector to move at a very slow pace.
