Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB Advices Parents to Be of Good Influence to their Children/Wards While Choosing their Subjects for their Respective Courses to avoid Been Denied Admission by the Board.
The correct subject combination at the point of registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has far- reaching implications for candidates’ personal and professional lives.It is a common sight to see UTME candidates choosing a particular programme at the point of registration because their parents instructed them to do so.
However, this process should involve not only parents but candidates and teachers so that the final choice would harness the candidates’ potentials.
Candidates should be given necessary support to express their choice in relation to their future careers.
This is because career is a developmental process where stakeholders play a critical role in facilitating candidates’ choices through counseling.
It would therefore not be out of place to advise candidates to look at the things they do well so as to identify key skills and leverage on these to select a suitable career choice.
Before the commencement of the sale of application documents for the 2019 UTME, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), made available subject combinations for all programmes to aid the would- be candidates to complete their UTME/DE application documents.
This was to prevent candidates from choosing programmes for which they are not qualified.
The newly- introduced Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS) has taken this process a step further as candidates can use the system to check whether they are qualified for a programme in a particular institution or not.
Prospective candidates who are successful in the UTME and SSCE might wonder why they are not admitted despite their good grades.
Wrong UTME and O'level combinations are identified as the reasons many candidates are denied admissions.
To be successful in tertiary education, candidates must prepare themselves well academically by knowing the subjects that are related to their career aspirations.
