Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro (DSPZ) Press Release on the Unruly Behavior of the Students Union Executive, Gives Reasons for the Ban of Students Cars and Commercial Motorcycles in Campus.
Following the protest of the students of Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro on Tuesday 28th January, 2020 which led to the shut down the school main gate during their protest, The Management of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro wishes to inform members of the Polytechnic and the general public as follows:i. The decision to ban students' cars, tinted vehicles and commercial motorcycles from entering the Polytechnic premises was for the safety, security and well-being of students in particular and other members of the Polytechnic Community in general.
ii. The decision was reached after due consideration and approval of the recommendations from the Security Committee by the Governing Council of me Delta State Polytechnic. Ozoro.
iii. The presence of students' vehicles and commercial motorcycles was causing serious problem in the system cue to their reckless driving which were causing several accidents and security breaches In one of the occasions, a girl friend of one of the student car owners was learning how to drive with the car and in the process crushed another female student and till date, the student concerned has not been able to resume for her academic activities due to the injury sustained ever though the incident which took place more than ten months ago.
iv. To ameliorate the perceived stress for students and other members of the Polytechnic Community. Tricycles were allowed to operate in the Polytechnic premises to convey them from the main gate to any part of the Polytechnic premises.
v. We are not aware of any Tertiary Institution in the State or the Country where commercial motorcyclists are allowed to operate freely or when Internet Fraudsters popularly known as 'Yahoo Boys' are allowed to flood the Campus with their exotic cars.
vi. The Stale Government has banned the use of unauthorized tinted cars and as such there is no way the Polytechnic can allow tinted cars into the Campus.
vii. The Students Union Executive had not at any time approached Management for dialogue over the issues being raised before embarking on their action which has caused the Polytechnic serious embarrassment.
viii. The Polytechnic reserves the right to make rules and regulations that will assist in the peaceful conduct of the business of the Institution.
The foregoing have been clearly stated in the Polytechnic Law, Students Information Handbook and Matriculation Oath Form.
ix. All students are expected to adhere to and not to breath their Matriculation Oath, otherwise relevant section of the Oath will be invoked against them.
